Leading the Way
SIRS Industries is leading the way as a role model for providers of services to persons with disabilities and employers in the community. SIRS is one in a short list of progressive agencies in Indiana that have completely focused on community options rather than segregated sheltered work programs for persons with disabilities.
The Ferdinand SIRS Industries plant completed its transition to an inclusive community employer in November 2002. The Boonville plant followed in June 2004, and the last piece of the transition was completed with the Troy facility in October 2004. SIRS, as a provider of services to individuals with disabilities, chooses not to include sheltered work programs as part of the services we offer. We operate SIRS Industries as a community employer for those with and without disabilities. SIRS Industries financially sustains the support services SIRS offers to adults and children with disabilities.
SIRS Industries is a little hard to define. We simply don't manufacture one product. We grew from providing benchwork services to area businesses as a resource manufacturer and evolved into more and more demanding manufacturing activities. We did hard-to-fit projects, projects that did not suit normal operations, special runs, or test runs for new products, and a variety of other things. We still do that and more.
